Riverdale Nearly Made Sabrina Spellman Into A Season Two Villain

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina may never have been if the Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also pens the upcoming witchy horror, had ran with his original idea to turn Sabrina into a villain.

Roberto says that his original idea for Sabrina was to create a Greendale and Riverdale cross-over, introducing the teenage witch at the end of season one as the main antagonist for season two of Riverdale. Just imagine.

Hiram Lodge is quaking at the thought.

“During season 1 of Riverdale — before Riverdale exploded and found its footing as sort of a noir, crime, pulp show — we had said, ‘Maybe season 2 will be like [the comic] Afterlife with Archie,'” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“‘We’ll do a big genre switch and it will be horror, and it will be Afterlife and Sabrina could come and be the antagonist.'” Sabrina, a villain? Please, no.

“There was even a time when we talked about the season 1 cliff hanger being the arrival of Sabrina,” he added.

But it looks like a cross-over between the two shows may not even be happening in the near future either, as Roberto wants to keep both series separate. Sad times.

“For various reasons, and I think partly because Riverdale found its footing as more [of a] crime show, [a crossover] felt less and less like the right fit,” Aguirre-Sacasa said.

“It felt like if Riverdale is crime and pulp and all that stuff, then Sabrina could be horror. It felt like there was a separation between Greendale and Riverdale — magic should exist in Greendale, but not in Riverdale. That was the thought.”

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was also meant to be penned as a movie before being taken to Netflix as a show. Honestly, poor Sabrina has been through the works.

And we know Roberto has made a comment on why there shouldn’t be a cross-over, but he hasn’t directly said there won’t be, so stay hopeful. It could totally still happen. It’s all in the wording.

Regardless, we only have a real short time to wait now until we get to binge-watch the whole series as it drops on 26 October.
