At midday, those inside
the ground might have assumed they would be unpacking their lunches on the bus
home, as they watched Craig Miles become the seventh Warwickshire player
dismissed in the second innings with the Bears still 37 runs behind.
But
Tim Ambrose remained willing if he could find a partner who was able, and Henry
Brookes, scorer of two half-centuries in the lower order last season, took on
the task with confidence.
The 19-year-old number nine crunched a few
satisfying boundaries early on to settle in, while Ambrose, who had played with
soft enough hands to make sure a couple of early edges fell short of the slips,
accumulated steadily.
By the break they had erased that deficit of 37 and
added as many again.
After what happened at Taunton last week, Kent would have
been in no danger of celebrating a win prematurely in any case.
